Spain is working to recover from the severe floods that hit the Valencia region last month. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced an additional €4.37 billion in aid for the affected areas. This aid will be used for the reconstruction of the region and to better address the climate emergency.

The floods, which began on October 29 and caused significant destruction in the southern suburbs of Valencia, resulted in the deaths of over 220 people. The government plans to assist 400,000 workers, 30,000 companies, and 100,000 homes affected by the floods. Additionally, €500 million has been allocated for urgent needs such as clearing mud from the streets and repairing water and sanitation networks.

Following the disaster, the public took to the streets to protest the government’s inadequacy and demanded the resignation of regional leader Carlos Mazon. However, the government rejected the criticisms, emphasizing their support for the victims.

It is hoped that this aid package will contribute to the region’s recovery and make it more resilient to future disasters.
